ANGELES CITY, Pampanga — The Archdiocese of San Fernando, Pampanga and City Government of Angeles has invited residents and visitors to take part in the solemn proclamation of Holy Rosary Parish as a Minor Basilica, a landmark religious event scheduled for June 10 that is expected to draw thousands of faithful from across Pampanga and beyond.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at Holy Rosary Parish in the city’s historic district and will mark one of the most significant milestones in the church’s history.

Church and local government officials said the celebration will be led by Archbishop Florentino G. Lavarias of the Archdiocese of San Fernando. Also expected to attend is Archbishop Charles J. Brown, the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines and the diplomatic representative of the Holy See in the country.

The proclamation elevates Holy Rosary Parish to the status of a Minor Basilica, a distinction granted by the Vatican to churches recognized for their historical, spiritual, architectural, and pastoral significance. The designation is considered among the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a Catholic church outside of the major basilicas located in Rome.

Local officials described the event as a significant occasion not only for parishioners but also for the broader Angeles City community, citing the church’s longstanding role in the city’s religious and cultural life.

Located near the city’s heritage zone, Holy Rosary Parish has served generations of Catholics and remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in Pampanga. The church has played a central role in major religious celebrations, community gatherings, and historical events throughout the city’s development.

The elevation to Minor Basilica status is expected to strengthen the parish’s standing as an important destination for pilgrims and religious visitors. Church experts note that basilicas are often recognized for their special connection to the Vatican and their contribution to the preservation of Catholic traditions and worship.

The upcoming proclamation is also expected to bring increased attention to Angeles City’s heritage and tourism sectors. Religious tourism has become an important component of local economies across the Philippines, particularly in areas known for historic churches and faith-based celebrations.

Authorities have been preparing for large crowds expected to attend the event. Traffic management measures, including temporary road closures and rerouting schemes, have already been announced in parts of the city center to accommodate parishioners, guests, and dignitaries participating in the ceremony.

For many Kapampangans, the proclamation represents a moment of pride and recognition of the region’s deep-rooted Catholic faith. Pampanga is widely regarded as one of the country’s centers of religious devotion, known for its historic churches, traditional observances, and large-scale faith celebrations.

City officials encouraged residents to participate in the historic occasion, describing it as a celebration of faith, heritage, and community.

As preparations continue, church leaders and local authorities are expecting the event to become one of the most significant religious gatherings in Angeles City this year.
