MANILA, Philippines — Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has suggested holding snap elections as a potential step toward restoring public confidence in government institutions.
In a post shared on social media, Cayetano proposed that all elected national officials—including the President, Vice President, senators, and members of Congress—should voluntarily step down to make way for new elections. Under his proposal, no incumbent official would be eligible to run in the succeeding polls.
“No drama, no excuses, no recycling. Just a clean slate for the Filipino people,” Cayetano wrote.
The senator said his proposal stems from growing public distrust in politicians and government officials, adding that Filipinos have become increasingly skeptical of those in power.
“I dare say, now more than ever in our history, politicians are suspects,” he said. “People have lost trust in government and government officials. Honestly, who can blame them?”
Cayetano described the proposal as a “sacrifice from public servants”—a move that, he believes, could serve as a turning point for national renewal and help rebuild citizens’ faith in the country’s democratic institutions.
