Negros Island’s Kanlaon Volcano erupted briefly but spectacularly on Friday night, October 24, 2025, marking another episode of increased volcanic activity in recent days.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the minor explosive eruption lasted from 8:05 p.m. to 8:08 p.m., producing a towering ash plume that rose approximately 2,000 meters above the crater before drifting northeast.
Time-lapse footage from the Lower Masulog, Canlaon City observation station captured the dramatic event, showing pyroclastic density currents—hot mixtures of gas and volcanic debris—rushing down the volcano’s southern slopes within a kilometer of the summit.
Canlaon City Mayor Jose Chubasco “Batchuk” Cardenas said all rescue units and emergency vehicles have been placed on standby in case evacuations become necessary. The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) is working closely with barangay officials to monitor the situation and ensure resident safety.
The latest eruption comes just a day after the volcano emitted two separate ash plumes on Thursday morning, October 23, rising as high as 600 meters. Those emissions occurred between 5:30 a.m. and 8:05 a.m.
PHIVOLCS has maintained Alert Level 2 over Kanlaon, indicating “increased unrest” and reminding the public to stay outside the four-kilometer permanent danger zone due to the potential for sudden eruptions or rockfall events.
The volcano, one of the most active in the Philippines, continues to be under close surveillance as local authorities brace for possible further activity.
