MANILA, Philippines — Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. has directed a review of farm-to-market road (FMR) projects amid mounting corruption allegations tied to government infrastructure.
In a statement Thursday, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said the order was issued in light of ongoing Senate hearings on questionable flood control projects under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The DA explained that while it handles the identification and validation of FMR projects, the DPWH takes charge of commissioning, bidding, and construction.
Tiu Laurel wants a full accounting of how the projects have been carried out, citing concerns that similar anomalies could be taking place.
Flood control projects under DPWH have been linked to kickbacks involving lawmakers, contractors, and former agency officials.
The scandal has already triggered a leadership shake-up in Congress, with key senators and representatives facing scrutiny.
Several DPWH officials and contractors have also been charged as the investigation deepens.
Authorities say the audit of farm-to-market roads is aimed at ensuring funds meant to support farmers are protected from misuse.
