In a move to bridge the gap between remote communities and critical healthcare, the “Hospital on Wheels” (HOW) program is officially expanding its footprint in the province of Pampanga.
Adopting the philosophy that if the mountain will not come to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to the mountain, the organization aims to bring specialized medical services directly to the doorsteps of those who need it most.
A Partnership for Health
The expansion follows a successful mission in Porac last December, where the mobile hospital provided free medical services to Aeta indigenous communities. Seeking to scale this impact, HOW President Dr. Philippe Punsalan recently met with Vice Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda and Board Member Kaye Naguit.
The meeting centered on a strategic partnership with the provincial government to identify high-priority areas where residents face significant barriers to accessing hospital facilities.
What is ‘Hospital on Wheels’?
Founded in 2007, HOW is a non-profit, non-political, and non-religious volunteer organization. It functions as a fully-equipped mobile clinic designed to reach “last-mile” barangays.
Each mission is a comprehensive medical operation. According to the organization, a standard deployment targets:
- 400 general medical cases
- 100–200 surgical procedures
- 300 dental consultations
- 400 eye examinations (including free reading glasses)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) training for local barangay staff and volunteers
Specialized Surgical Care
Unlike many standard health fairs, HOW focuses on specialized external surgeries that are often prohibitively expensive for marginalized families. The mobile units are equipped to handle:
- Tumors and Growths: Removal of both benign and malignant masses.
- Hernia Repairs: Available for both pediatric and adult patients.
- Cleft Lip Surgery: Both primary repairs and revisions.
- Reconstructive Surgery: Various external procedures to improve function and appearance.
“Our goal is to bring quality, compassionate healthcare to those who find it difficult to reach a specialist,” the organization stated. “Together, we can save lives.”
The collaboration between the Pampanga Provincial Government and Hospital on Wheels is expected to roll out a series of missions across the province in the coming months, prioritizing the most underserved sectors.
