VALENZUELA CITY, Philippines — Kobe, a gentle and well-loved aspin from Barangay Balangkas, is recovering after surviving a brutal act of animal cruelty that has sparked outrage among animal welfare advocates and residents alike.
Kobe was found in the early hours of December 9 lying weak and bleeding, struggling to survive. His entire tongue had been cut off, an injury animal welfare groups say could only have been inflicted deliberately. Despite the severity of the attack, Kobe survived and is now confined, receiving treatment as he fights his way toward recovery.
Animal lovers and advocates have condemned the incident, describing it as a stark reminder of the dangers animals continue to face within communities.
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) confirmed that it is actively investigating the case in coordination with Kobe’s furparent. PAWS is appealing to the public for information, urging anyone who may have seen, heard, or knows anything related to the incident to come forward to help identify those responsible.
“This level of cruelty is deeply disturbing,” animal welfare advocates said, stressing that no animal deserves to suffer such abuse.
The case has also drawn condemnation from former Valenzuela City Mayor and Congressman Rex Gatchalian, who publicly denounced the attack and expressed disappointment that such an act occurred in a city that prides itself on compassion and respect for life. Gatchalian announced he is offering a ₱100,000 reward from his personal funds to anyone who can provide information leading to the identification of the perpetrator.
Animal welfare groups and community members are now calling for vigilance and collective action to ensure justice for Kobe and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“Kobe deserves justice,” advocates said. “Our communities deserve safety, and all animals deserve compassion.”
As investigations continue, Kobe’s story has become a rallying cry for stronger enforcement of animal welfare laws and a renewed commitment to protecting those who cannot speak for themselves.
