MANILA — The Philippines lit up the global stage as Ahtisa Manalo, the country’s representative to Miss Universe, stepped out in “Festejada,” a breathtaking national costume designed by acclaimed Kapampangan couturier Mak Tumang. The ensemble, proudly rooted in Pampanga’s artistry and cultural heritage, celebrates the nation’s most beloved festivals and the enduring elegance of the Filipina.
Described as the “Queen of Philippine Festivals,” “Festejada” captures the grandeur, color, and spirit of Filipino celebrations. Tumang’s design draws from the classic traje de mestiza — with its bell-shaped camisa, flowing saya, and draped pañuelo — evoking the timeless image of María Clara, the symbol of grace immortalized in José Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere.
Manalo’s upper ensemble is crafted from handwoven piña, a textile unique to the Philippines and prized for its natural sheen and cultural significance. Intricate embroidery enriches the garment with meaningful motifs: the abanico, a classic accessory once used as a silent language of emotion, and palay, symbolizing abundance and the unity of communities.
The show-stopping skirt features more than 65,000 individually hand-sewn petals, transforming it into a moving festival tapestry. Each layer pays tribute to a cherished Filipino celebration:
Giant Lantern Festival of Pampanga: Patterns inspired by the renowned Kapampangan parol, with tiers reflecting elements such as the Tambur, Siku-Siku, and Palimbun — a proud nod to Tumang’s home province.
Pahiyas Festival of Lucban: Bold hues of green, yellow, orange, pink, and red channel the joy and gratitude of harvest season.
Panagbenga Festival of Baguio: Floral textures echo the blooming floats that define the country’s iconic flower festival.
Topping off the look is a reimagined peineta, rising like a radiant halo above Manalo’s coiffure. Adorned with tambourine and filigree-inspired gold accents, it mirrors the richness of traditional Philippine jewelry and highlights the country’s goldsmithing tradition.
