Los Angeles, California — A towering symbol of Filipino artistry is set to shine on the U.S. West Coast this week, as an 18-foot giant lantern from San Fernando, Pampanga prepares for its debut lighting in Santa Monica.
The massive lantern, now mounted on the facade of the Island Pacific supermarket, was crafted by renowned lantern maker Arvin Quiwa and his team in the Philippines. Shipped from the country’s “Christmas Capital,” the installation features 13 meticulously designed panels that illuminate in synchronized patterns—creating the signature radiant circle San Fernando is known for.
After days of assembly and electrical setup, the lantern is ready for its first lighting on November 22 at 6:00 p.m. (PST). City tourism officials say anticipation is building among both Filipino Americans and local residents, noting that this is the largest Fernandino lantern ever showcased outside the Philippines.
The unveiling will headline the Paskong Pinoy BER-Kada Fiesta, a community celebration featuring Filipino food, trade booths, and cultural performances. The event is a collaboration between the City Government of San Fernando, the Philippine Trade and Investment Center–Los Angeles, Island Pacific, and several community partners.
San Fernando Mayor Vilma Balle-Caluag, together with arts advocates and representatives from Island Pacific, is expected to attend the lighting ceremony. Organizers say the display marks an important cultural milestone—bringing a beloved Philippine Christmas tradition to a global stage and highlighting the craftsmanship that defines Pampanga’s iconic holiday lanterns.
