Elon Musk has introduced a new online encyclopedia, Grokipedia, and he’s making no secret of its ambitions: Musk says it’s meant to be a truth-focused alternative to Wikipedia — the very platform he’s repeatedly bashed for alleged political bias.
In a post on his own social network, the billionaire announced that Grokipedia.com is officially live. He described its mission as delivering “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” tapping into his ongoing narrative that existing knowledge platforms can’t be trusted.
The website itself looks barebones for now — essentially a search bar and a claim that nearly 900,000 articles are already available. For comparison: Wikipedia’s English-language content has passed 7 million entries after more than two decades of volunteer collaboration.
Visitors can search popular topics — celebrities, major cultural events, historical places — much like they would on Wikipedia. What’s still a mystery, though, is how the articles are created and edited. Musk previously said the service would be powered by xAI, the company behind his irreverent chatbot Grok. Early users have noticed that some articles appear to mirror Wikipedia pages, raising questions about the extent to which the platform uses pre-existing content.
While Wikipedia has long served as a foundational dataset for numerous AI models (including some developed by companies Musk has criticized), U.S. lawmakers have recently probed concerns about alleged political influence in its editing ecosystem. Musk has leaned heavily into those concerns as justification for his new platform.
Wikipedia requires thorough citation and often flags or removes unsourced claims. Grokipedia, on the other hand, currently appears to be much looser with sourcing. One example circulating online: Its entry on the Chola Dynasty references only a handful of links, while Wikipedia’s equivalent page includes extensive citations from both digital and print sources.
Grokipedia’s own article about Wikipedia directly accuses the nonprofit-run site of “systemic ideological bias,” specifically pointing to political coverage. The Wikimedia Foundation, which oversees Wikipedia, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
For now, Grokipedia seems to be in an experimental phase — part encyclopedia, part AI testbed. Whether it becomes a genuine competitor or just another Musk controversy generator remains very much up for debate.
