NEGROS ISLAND, Philippines (PN News) — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has reported a rise in seismic activity at Kanlaon Volcano, recording a total of 81 volcanic earthquakes within a 10-hour period early Thursday, October 16, 2025.
According to PHIVOLCS, the quakes occurred between 12:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., with magnitudes ranging from ML 0.1 to ML 2.9 and depths of up to six kilometers beneath the volcano’s northwestern flank. Experts say these volcano-tectonic earthquakes were caused by rock fracturing, a possible sign that magma or volcanic gas is moving toward the surface.

Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) emissions from Kanlaon’s summit were also measured at 1,879 tonnes per day on October 15 — slightly above the volcano’s usual average for the year. PHIVOLCS warned that the buildup of gas pressure could potentially lead to a steam-driven or moderately explosive eruption.
The agency reminded the public that Alert Level 2 remains in effect, meaning the volcano is in a state of increased unrest. Residents are urged to avoid the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone and stay vigilant within a 6-kilometer radius in case volcanic activity intensifies.
Communities are also advised to prepare for possible ashfall, rockfall, pyroclastic flows, and mudflows, especially during heavy rain. PHIVOLCS further warned pilots to avoid flying near the volcano’s summit due to possible ash hazards to aircraft.
Authorities assured that Kanlaon Volcano is under close monitoring, and any significant changes in activity will be promptly reported.
