The Piggatan Bridge in Alcala, Cagayan, collapsed Monday afternoon, October 6, 2025, leaving the vital roadway impassable and prompting an ongoing investigation into the cause of the incident.
Initial reports from the Alcala Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) confirmed that several trailer trucks were crossing the bridge when the structure gave way. Authorities have yet to determine whether there were any injuries.
Cagayan Governor Edgar Aglipay, who visited the site later in the day, said the trucks involved were reportedly carrying agricultural products. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) stated that three trucks, each weighing around 50 tons, were on the bridge at the time — far exceeding the bridge’s 18-ton load capacity.
Officials believe overloading may have contributed to the collapse, though a full structural assessment is still underway.
The local government of Alcala is coordinating with national agencies to secure the area and manage traffic flow. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes while repairs and evaluations continue.
